nailing wood to concrete

Use a wood drill to get through the plate or plywood. Don't forget a gasket between the wood and concrete. Blueskin or a sill gasket material is fine. We used 3/8" P-2000 insulation.

We have tried concrete nails and found that they just split and crack the concrete with little and unreliable holding power. This method is better.

Don't even think about drilling the concrete with a regular drill. Use a hammer drill only. The mason bit is designed to hammer the hole out, not cut it. You can rent one like the pros use for 25.- or borrow one from a neighbor like we did. (thanks Brent).

Make the bit bigger than the nail you are using and use a couple of pieces of copper wire (#14 electrical without insulation is what we used in the video). Make the copper wire the same size as the nail and drop it in the hole first. The copper deforms like a rivet in the hole and makes for a nice tight hold.
