Abstract

Recently, industrial machines or automotive vehicles have gained in performance and/ or in size, and are operated in more severe conditions than ever, therefore lubricants in those machines are strongly requested to have more improved performance such as thermal stability, shear stability or energy efficiency.

Polyalkylmethacrylate (PAMA), olefin copolymer (OCP), polybutene, or high viscous poly alpha olefin (PAO) are considered as viscosity modifiers for gear oils or greases, and each material is selected by its performance. PAMA or OCP provide excellent viscometric properties of the formulated oil, such as viscosity index and low temperature properties. However, these polymeric materials show disadvantages in shear stability and/or oxidative stability; in other words, lubricants with them show poor durability. Polybutene is one of the cheapest solutions for the formulation of lubricants, but it shows poor viscometric properties and thermal stability.

Besides those polymeric materials, PAO shows excellent shear stability and oxidative stability thanks to its low molecular weight and fully saturated hydrocarbon structure, while its viscometric properties do not reach PAMA or OCP. Especially for wind turbine gear oils or heavy duty automotive axle fluids, PAO-based gear oil is playing a leading role for the purpose of reducing maintenance costs of machines. However, high viscous PAO needs much higher dosage in the formulation when compared with polymeric materials; therefore, it can be adopted only for fully

Liquid ethylene-propylene copolymer, provided as LUCANT from Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., fills the gap of the performance balance between polymeric materials and high viscous PAO. It has a viscosity range of 40 mm2/s to 2,000mm2/s, which comprises five grades of 40, 100, 600, 1100 and 2000 mm2/s at 100°C. Since it is obtained by direct polymerization, not by degradation of higher molecular weight materials, it has excellent chemical stabilities such as thermal or oxidative stabilities. Moreover, the molecular structure such as composition or stereo regularity of the liquid ethylene-propylene copolymer is well controlled to have excellent viscometric properties, which contributes a great deal to the improvement of energy efficiency.

In the presentation, the performance of liquid ethylene-propylene copolymer will be discussed not only in bulk properties but also in formulated oils such as automotive gear oils and industrial gear oils and in greases.

Shota Abe is senior researcher of the Functional Polymeric Materials Business Division at Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. He received his doctorate in Engineering from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, in 2003. He joined Mitsui Chemicals in 2003, as a researcher for the development and technical support for customers of the optical polymer APELTM from 2003-2008. He has been involved in the development of new materials for hydrocarbon viscosity modifiers and technical support for customers of the liquid ethylene-propylene oligomer, LUCANTTM, since 2008.
