Prepping your concrete subfloor correctly will allow for a long lasting hardwood or laminate floor you can enjoy for many years. To prep for your floor you will need a hammer, pry bar, concrete grinder, level, tape measure, leveling compound, trowel, mixing bucket, back saw, circular saw, moisture text kit for concrete, vapor barrier and a chalk line.
Concrete subfloors will only support laminate, locking, 5/16'' solid and engineered hardwood. Determine how much flooring and materials you will need by multiplying the length by width of the room, plus 10% for extra material. To begin, remove any baseboards. Check the doorway clearance and the door. If the laminate plus subfloor are too high, cut your door.
The subfloor should be clean, level, dry and sound. Any wax, paint, oil, sealers, adhesives will need to be removed with a concrete grinder. The floor should not be slick or rough. Check to see if the floor is level. For any high spots, use the concrete grinder, and for any low spots use leveling compound. Finally measure and prep your subfloor with by making sure the room is square. Snap a chalk line to mark the center of the room.
Once these are marked, you are now ready to install your concrete subfloor.
